Join us and help bring the Ancient Unicorn back to life
I purchased the The Ancient Unicorn on 31st January 2015, when it was a sad, tired building with rain pouring through the roofs, rotten windows, and a mish-mash of 15 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. The historic bar that dates back to the 16th Century or possibly even earlier had been wrecked by a succession of modern breweries in recent years, and there was a gorgeous Georgian restaurant flooded by the many bathrooms above, leaving most of the ceiling on the floor. This led through to the kitchens which were a sight to behold.
I had fallen in love with the building, the area and the people, with a vision in mind to bring The Ancient Unicorn back to life as the true Coaching Inn it was and could be again. My vision was simple – to have a warm, welcoming building with roaring fires, good beer at a reasonable price, home-cooked food in the bar, some lovely guest rooms and over time to bring the restaurant back to the grandeur it once knew.
Since then we have been on a journey, continually adding to our vision. The bar and coffee shop are up and running, serving home-cooked food every day along with local ales and ciders. The bedrooms and bathrooms are all restored and working, accommodating guests most days now.
As 2017 starts we have plans to open the restaurant for some fine meals and to start serving afternoon teas to add to the welcoming environment we already offer.
Please pay us a visit and let us offer you some good old Teesdale hospitality, whether it’s for a quiet cup of coffee, a pint or two of real ale or a home-cooked meal, a good night’s rest, or even to see one of our legendary ghosts! Whatever the reason for your visit, we will do our best to give you a warm welcome.
