Enjoy comfort and calm

When you stay at the Ancient Unicorn there is plenty to explore in the beautiful, unspoiled area of Teesdale.
The countryside is stunning – changing with the seasons and you can walk for miles and see no-one.  The Pennine Way passes through Bowes so you can take in part of this historic route, exploring the ruined castle in the village or just soaking up the stunning views from the bench by the castle.  A dream for photographers and artists!
Travelling just a bit further, the 3.5 miles into Barnard Castle, this historic, quaint market town with its massive ruined castle is set alongside a fabulous bubbling river.  It’s well worth taking some time to wander around the streets, enjoying the coffee shops and traditional old shops. If you have a whole day to spare you have to take in the Bowes Museum, a massive French Chateau packed full of amazing artefacts collected by the Bowes family over their travels.

Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, County Durham. It is also the name of the castle around which the town is built.

Raby Castle

Raby Castle is without doubt one of the most impressive intact castles in the North of England with a rich history.

Low Force

Low Force waterfall is part of the River Tees in beautiful upper Teesdale. Accessible from Bowlees visitor centre.

High Force

With origins dating back over 300 million years, High Force is one of the most impressive waterfalls in England.

Bowes Museum (Barnard Castle)

The Bowes Museum has a nationally renowned art collection and is situated in the town of Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham.

Barnard Castle walk is a 5 mile walk through Barnard Castle and the surrounding countryside and its offerings.

Whorlton Village

Whorlton is a small village in County Durham, in England. It is situated near the River Tees and to the east of Barnard Castle. Whorlton Bridge is a 183 ft long suspension bridge which crosses the River Tees.

Wainwright Way

An epic circular walk round the Pennine Way and the Yorkshire Dales. From Lancashire to the Lakes, the 126 mile long route and 10 day stages is a memorable one for the keen walkers among us.

Auckland Castle

Auckland Castle, is located in the town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England. In 1832, this castle replaced Durham Castle as the official residence of the Bishops of Durham. It is now a tourist attraction but still houses the Bishop's offices; the Castle is a Grade I listed historic site.
